Courthouse domeThe Newest Members of the WBA will be officially introduced to the court en banc at the annual New Members Ceremony on Monday, March 17th, in Ceremonial Courtroom No. 3 at the Westmoreland County Courthouse at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony is open to the public.

Annual MeetingOn Monday, April 7, be one of the attorneys and judges of Westmoreland County in attendance at the Annual Membership Meeting at the banquet center at Rizzo's. Join your friends and colleagues as they welcome Joe Lazzaro as the Incoming WBA President and thank our Outgoing President John Greiner for a great year of service. We will also be electing a new Vice President and two Directors for the Board, as well as new Membership and Building Committee members. A networking reception is scheduled for 6 p.m. with dinner to follow at 6:45 p.m.

Judge Gary Caruso presents the 2014 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award to John M. O'Connell, Jr.

The Westmoreland Bar Foundation recently named John M O’Connell, Jr., a partner with the law firm of O’Connell and Silvis, the 2014 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. This award is given to the attorney who has provided note-worthy volunteer legal representation of indigent Westmoreland County residents.

Attorney O’Connell has been a Pro Bono volunteer since 2008. He has concentrated his volunteer hours in landlord/tenant issues. Many of Mr. O’Connell’s representation saved clients from losing their housing.

At the Annual Membership Meeting of the Westmoreland Bar Association held on Monday, April 7th at Rizzo’s Banquet Hall, Joseph W. Lazzaro assumed the office of president. As Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Keystone Collections Group, Attorney Lazzaro concentrates his practice in local taxation law compliance, collection law, data security and government relations. He completed his undergraduate work in journalism at Penn State University and obtained his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Scholarships available for law school, court reporting students: Due June 18

The Westmoreland Bar Foundation is pleased to announce three law school scholarships available to Westmoreland County residents who are first-, second-, or third-year law students enrolled for the Fall semester of the 2014-15 school year.

The Wayne R. Donahue Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in a Pennsylvania law school; the Donald Laird Hankey Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in any law school; and the Honorable David H. Weiss Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a University of Pittsburgh law school student.

Applications can be acquired by contacting the financial aid office of Pennsylvania law schools, calling the Westmoreland Bar Association at 724.834.6730, or by clicking the link below. The deadline for submission is on or before June 18, 2014.

The Westmoreland Bar Foundation awards the Complete Court Reporting Service Scholarship to to Westmoreland County residents who are enrolled in the court reporting program at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC).

Applications can be acquired by contacting the financial aid office of CCAC, calling the office of the Westmoreland Bar Association at 724.834.6730, or by clicking the link below. The deadline for submission is on or before June 18, 2014.

Retirement Gathering for Judge Alfred B. Bell: Friday, July 18

The Hon. Alfred B. BellAll WBA members are invited to a Retirement Gathering for Judge Alfred B. Bell on Friday, July 18, in the Judge's Courtroom. Stop in anytime between Noon and 3 pm to help him celebrate his last official day on the bench. This gathering will be the only opportunity to say "goodbye" to Judge Bell, so mark your calendars and plan to join the well-wishers on the 18th.

Notice from the Register of Wills: Due to recent actions of the Legislature, all JCS / ATJ / CJEA fees collected by the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court offices will increase to $35.50 effective August 08, 2014.

Notice from the Prothonotary: Acts 113 and 126 of 2014 signed by Governor Corbett JCP/ATJ/CJEA will increase as of August 8, 2014 by $12.00. Please visit Prothonotary website for new fee schedule.
